About me
I have been teaching piano for nearly 20 years and have a wealth of experience supporting young people on their musical journey. I teach from home in the evenings in Burgess Hill, where I have a dedicated teaching space.
Background
My musical journey started when I began piano lessons at the age of 5. I went on to pass Grade 8 with Distinction at the age of 15, and following completing A Levels at East Sussex Academy of Music I went onto undergraduate study at University of Huddersfield. Here, I specialised in piano performance and also enjoyed modules exploring chamber music, music teaching, harpsichord and musicology. I graduated in 2009 with a 2:1.
Teaching Experience
I trained as a secondary school music teacher at University of Sussex with the fantastic Dr Ally Daubney and Duncan Mackrill as my tutors. I passed my PGCE 11-18 with Merit and have subsequently worked in outstanding secondary schools in West Sussex, including seven years as a Subject Leader for Music in Mid-Sussex. I have also undertaken primary music teaching and from 2017-2019 worked as Leader for Secondary School Engagement for West Sussex Music.
Additional Qualifications & Services
I completed a Masters in Education at University of Chichester in 2015, demonstrating my committment to continuing professional development.
As well as piano teaching, I am able to provide tuition in music theory and accompanying for graded music exams.
I am also able to offer tutoring for GCSE Music and A Level Music. I have a long track record of excellent pupil exam results in my secondary teaching career with many of my former pupils going on to study music at conservatoires, Russell Group universities, and Oxbridge. I have also worked as an A Level Music examiner for one of the leading exam boards.
Musical Theatre
Through both my freelance work and career in secondary education, I have developed a vast experience in producing youth musical theatre. I have been Musical Director for productions including Hairspray, Oliver, Sister Act, Jesus Christ Superstar, Billy Elliott and The Wiz and have worked as Vocal Director for shows including Whistle Down the Wind, We Will Rock You and The Addams Family. I have also previously worked with the Hawth Youth Theatre and regularly work for Point4 Performing Arts Workshops.
